Synopsis: This course combines political theory with American and comparative politics to trace the effect of religion on politics and of politics on religion.  We begin with the ancient Greeks, reading Socrates, and move to the Hebrew and Christian scriptures and their interpretation through St. Augustine.  After a brief stop in the Enlightenment and we look at Islam, we trace religious developments in the US and in Europe, and end with a theological and political exploration of radical Islam.
