Synopsis:  The course examines different types of capitalist economies and the way they are affected by the globalization of trade and capital markets.  The first part of the course deals with differences in the politics and economy of Europe and the United States. The second part of the course focuses on how democratic governments in Latin America have dealt with the challenges of market reform.  The third focuses on democracy and market reform in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
