This course explores the historical construction of race and ethnicity through political and social institutions in the United States.  Beginning with slavery and the American Founding, the course traces the development of race relations through a number of key political and cultural shifts. Topics include colonial expansion, immigration, legal segregation, civil rights movements, welfare, affirmative action, and efforts to build pan-ethnic or multiracial coalitions.
